You don't need to be an artist to draw a unicorn. Seriously. If you can draw a circle and a few curved lines, you're already halfway there. The kawaii style makes it even easier because the whole point is to keep things simple, round, and ridiculously cute.

This step-by-step tutorial breaks the process into six manageable steps, and we've included an image for each one so you can see exactly what your drawing should look like at every stage. Whether you're a kid learning to draw or an adult who wants to doodle something adorable during a boring meeting, this tutorial has you covered.

Grab a pencil and let's do this.

What You'll Need

Nothing fancy. The beauty of kawaii drawing is that you don't need expensive supplies or special tools.

  • A pencil (any regular pencil works)
  • An eraser (you'll probably use this more than you think, and that's totally fine)
  • Paper (plain printer paper, sketchbook, notebook, whatever you've got)
  • Colored pencils, markers, or crayons for the fun part at the end
  • A black pen or fine-tip marker if you want to outline your finished drawing

That's it. If you've got a pencil and paper, you're ready to go.

Step-by-Step: Draw Your Kawaii Unicorn

Each step builds on the last one. Take your time and don't worry about making it perfect on the first try. Kawaii art is supposed to look a little wobbly and imperfect. That's part of the charm.

Step 1: Draw the Head Shape

Start with a large, slightly flattened oval shape. Think of it like a potato or a chubby egg lying on its side. This is going to be the unicorn's head, and in kawaii style, the head is always oversized compared to the body. That's what makes it cute.

Don't press too hard with your pencil here. Keep the lines light so you can adjust the shape if needed. The oval should take up roughly the top third of your paper, leaving room below for the body and legs.

Pro tip: if your oval looks a bit lopsided, that's actually fine. Kawaii characters look better with slight imperfections. Perfectly symmetrical shapes can look stiff.

Step 2: Add the Muzzle

Take a little magic home

At the bottom of your oval, draw a small, rounded bump sticking out slightly. This is the unicorn's muzzle (the snout area). Keep it small and subtle. In kawaii style, the muzzle barely sticks out from the head shape. Think of it like a tiny hill on the lower edge of the oval.

You can also add two tiny dots near the bottom of the muzzle for nostrils, but this is optional. Some kawaii unicorns skip the nostrils entirely and it works just as well.

Step 3: Add the Horn and Ears

Now for the signature unicorn feature. Draw a cone shape on top of the head, slightly off-center (unicorn horns look better when they're not perfectly centered). Add three or four horizontal lines across the cone to give it that classic spiral horn look.

On either side of the horn, draw two small pointed ears. Each ear is basically a triangle with slightly curved sides. The ears should be about half the height of the horn, maybe a bit less.

This is the step where it starts looking like a unicorn instead of just a blob. Satisfying, right?

Step 4: Draw the Kawaii Eyes and Smile

Here's where the magic happens. Kawaii eyes are what make the whole drawing come alive. Draw two large ovals in the upper half of the face, spaced apart so there's room for the horn above them. Each eye should be pretty big compared to the head. That's the kawaii secret: big eyes, small everything else.

Inside each eye, draw a large filled-in circle (the pupil) but leave a small white circle in the upper right corner of each pupil. Those white spots are the "shine" or light reflection, and they're what makes kawaii eyes look alive and sparkly. This tiny detail makes a huge difference.

Below the eyes, add a small curved line for the mouth. Just a gentle upward curve. Simple. Some people add a tiny "w" shape for a cat-like mouth, which also looks adorable on a kawaii unicorn.

Optional: add two small circles on the cheeks, just below and to the outside of each eye. These are blush marks, and they make your unicorn look even cuter.

Step 5: Add the Flowing Mane

Step 5 of kawaii unicorn drawing with a flowing wavy mane added to the side

The mane is where you get to be creative. Starting from behind one ear, draw a series of wavy, flowing curves that cascade down one side of the head. Think of it like soft-serve ice cream or ocean waves. Three to five flowing sections work well.

The mane should look like it's gently blowing in the wind. Each section can overlap slightly with the one below it. Don't make the lines too rigid or straight. Loose, curvy lines give the mane that effortless magical look.

You can also add a small forelock (a tuft of mane between the ears, falling over the forehead). It adds a lot of personality to the design. If you need inspiration for what colors to use on the mane, rainbow gradients and pastel combinations both work beautifully.

Step 6: Draw the Body, Legs, and Tail

Almost there. Below the head, draw a small, rounded rectangle shape for the body. Remember: kawaii proportions mean the body is much smaller than the head. It should only be about half the height of the head oval.

Find yours below

Add four short, stubby legs at the bottom of the body. Each leg is basically a small rounded rectangle. You can add tiny half-circles at the bottom of each leg for hooves.

Finally, the tail. Draw flowing curves coming off the back of the body, similar to the mane style but going in the other direction. Two or three wavy sections work well. The tail should echo the same flowing energy as the mane.

And that's it. You just drew a kawaii unicorn. Erase any rough guidelines you don't need anymore, go over the final lines with a pen or darker pencil if you want, and then grab your colors.

Tips for Making Your Unicorn Even Cuter

Once you've got the basic drawing down, here are some ways to take it up a notch:

Add accessories. A tiny crown, a bow on the tail, a flower behind the ear, little stars floating around it. Accessories take ten seconds to draw and add tons of personality.

Experiment with expressions. Change the mouth from a smile to a surprised "o" shape, or draw closed happy eyes (two curved lines like upside-down "u" shapes). Different expressions give your unicorn completely different vibes.

Play with proportions. Make the head even bigger, the legs even stubbier, the eyes even larger. The more exaggerated the proportions, the more kawaii it gets.

Try different poses. Once you're comfortable with the basic shape, try drawing your unicorn sitting, lying down, jumping, or even sleeping. The same basic shapes apply, just rearranged.

Color strategically. Pastel colors are the classic kawaii choice, but don't feel limited. A galaxy-colored unicorn with deep purples and blues looks stunning. So does a sunset unicorn in warm pinks and oranges. Our unicorn pixel art guide uses a completely different color approach that might spark some ideas.

What to Do With Your Finished Drawing

So you've got a cute kawaii unicorn drawing. Now what?

Lots of options, actually. You can turn it into a greeting card by drawing it on folded cardstock. Use it as wall art by framing it or taping it up with washi tape. If you drew it on regular paper, you can photograph or scan it and use it as a phone wallpaper. Some of our followers have turned their unicorn drawings into custom stickers using printable sticker paper.

It also makes a great starting point for unicorn crafts. Draw your unicorn on thicker paper, cut it out, and use it as a template for other projects. Felt unicorns, paper garlands, gift tags. One drawing can become the basis for a dozen different things.

If you're feeling ambitious, try drawing a whole scene around your unicorn. A rainbow, some clouds, a meadow with flowers. Put your kawaii unicorn in its own little world. Drawing is one of those skills where the more you practice, the more fun it gets. And kawaii unicorns are the perfect subject to practice on because honestly, they always turn out cute. Even the wonky ones. Especially the wonky ones.
